Wild Betel Leaf Plant

The Wild Betel Leaf Plant brings glossy edible foliage, warm peppery flavour and generations of Southeast Asian culinary tradition into the garden.

Botanically known as Piper sarmentosum, this perennial evergreen trailer thrives throughout Southeast Asia, southern China and northern Australia. People have long gathered its leaves for everyday cooking, particularly in Vietnamese, Thai, Malaysian and Lao cuisines.

People across its range have given the species many names, including Wild Betel, Wild Betel Leaf, Wild Betel Pepper, Wild Pepper, Betel Leaf, Lolot, Lolot Pepper, Piper Lolot, Vegetable Pepper, Vegetable Leaf Pepper, Pointed Pepper, Lá Lốt, Lá Lốp, Kadok, Kaduk, Daun Kadok, Cha Phlu, Khae, Jia Ju, Poivre Lolot and Aimanas.

Large, heart-shaped leaves give this plant its lush appearance. Their aromatic, mildly pungent flavour makes them useful raw or cooked. Finely slice fresh leaves into salads, add them to fragrant dishes or use them as natural wraps around seasoned meat, seafood, vegetables or rice before grilling.

This is the pepper whose leaves people have traditionally used as food. Do not confuse it with our Paan or Betel Pepper Plant, which has the botanical name Piper betle and distinctly different traditional uses. The Betel Nut Palm is also separate; people have historically combined its nuts with Piper betle leaves in betel quid.

Beyond the kitchen, people have traditionally used the fruit as a tonic for complaints including coughs and asthma. These uses are ethnobotanical traditions rather than modern medical recommendations.

This attractive groundcover develops trailing stems and reaches approximately 60 cm high. Plant it in rich, well-composted soil that remains moist while draining freely. A warm, protected position with dappled light or partial shade will encourage healthy, glossy growth.

The plant responds sensitively to drought and frost, although established specimens may tolerate an occasional very light frost. In cooler districts, provide winter protection or grow it in a movable container.

Under warm, humid conditions, stems can root as they travel and spread freely. Grow it in pots where you need to contain its growth. Regularly harvest leaves to maintain a dense, productive plant and supply a steady succession of fresh, aromatic leaves.
