Theobroma cacao

Price range: $29 through $57.50

The Original Chocolate Tree

The Cacao Plant brings the remarkable story of chocolate into the garden. In fact, you can use its edible seeds to produce cacao, cocoa, and chocolate.

Officially named Theobroma cacao, this tropical evergreen is native to the Amazon Basin. People have cultivated cacao here for thousands of years. Additionally, people throughout Central and South America valued its seeds as an important ceremonial food and trade item. The name Theobroma translates to “food of the gods.” Consequently, this phrase shows the esteem people have long held for this extraordinary tree.

Growing the Cacao Plant

In suitable conditions, the Cacao Plant can develop into an evergreen tree. Specifically, it can reach approximately 8 metres high and 3 metres wide. Small, scented flowers emerge directly from the trunk and established branches. Notably, this unusual flowering habit is known as cauliflory. After the flowers bloom, large pods containing the valuable cacao beans appear.

This is a genuinely tropical species. It thrives only in warm, frost-free climates. For best results, plant it in a protected, shaded, or filtered-light position with fertile, well-composted soil. Consistent moisture and humidity also help the tree thrive, since it is sensitive to drought, drying winds, and frost. Alternatively, if you live in a cooler region, you can grow it in a large container within a warm greenhouse or a similarly protected environment.

From Cacao Plant to Chocolate

A sweet, tangy edible pulp surrounds fresh beans inside each pod. To develop their familiar chocolate character, people traditionally ferment, dry, and roast the beans before further processing. Next, you can use the beans to produce cacao products, cocoa powder, chocolate, and cocoa butter. In particular, people especially value cocoa butter in confectionery, food flavouring, skincare, and cosmetics.

Cacao also has a rich cultural history. In Central America, people have traditionally used the beans in ceremonial drinks. Additionally, they have also regarded them in folk practice as an aphrodisiac. Furthermore, if you want a collection inspired by the world’s treasured flavour plants, consider growing it alongside our Vanilla Plant, Coffee Plant, or Ceylon Cinnamon Plant.
