Titan Arum (Amorphophallus titanum), also known as the Corpse Flower, is one of the most remarkable botanical wonders. Native to the rainforests of western Sumatra, Indonesia, it produces the world’s largest unbranched flowering structure. Its massive size, unique life cycle, and rare, unforgettable blooms make it highly sought after by collectors.
Few plants command attention like the Titan Arum. When mature, its huge bloom can exceed two metres in height. The flowering period is brief, but unforgettable. The plant releases a scent of decaying flesh to attract beetles and flies for pollination. Since flowering happens only after years of growth and lasts just a few days, each bloom is a celebrated event in botanical gardens and private collections worldwide.
Most of its life is spent growing from a massive underground corm. It produces either a single enormous leaf or its iconic flowering structure. The tree-like leaf, with its thick mottled stem and broad canopy of divided leaflets, impresses even when the plant is not in bloom. This makes it a striking ornamental specimen at all stages of its life.
Titan Arum thrives in warm, humid conditions with bright filtered light and moist, well-drained soil. Patience is essential, as plants often take many years to bloom. Each growing season rewards the gardener with a more impressive specimen. As the corm enlarges over time, anticipation grows for one of the rarest flowering events in cultivation.
