The Lemon Basil Plant combines bright citrus fragrance with classic basil flavour in one highly useful culinary herb. Officially Ocimum × africanum, it is an aromatic annual valued for its fresh leaves and delicate flowers.
When you brush the foliage, the leaves release a distinctly lemony perfume. This fresh scent sets it apart from sweet basil and makes it especially appealing in warm-climate cooking. Its flavour is lightly peppery and citrus-led, adding brightness without lemon juice’s acidity.
This plant grows upright and branches out, producing green leaves and slender flower spikes that reach 40–60 cm tall. Bees and other beneficial insects visit the small flowers, while frequent harvesting encourages bushier growth and prolongs leaf production.
Southeast Asian food traditions, especially in Indonesia, Thailand, and Laos, feature lemon basil prominently. People grow it as an everyday kitchen herb rather than reserving it for garnishing. Its mix of basil warmth and lemon fragrance has also made it popular with gardeners seeking unusual, versatile edible plants.
Although some people call it African Basil, do not confuse it with our African Basil Plant, Ocimum gratissimum. That is a different, robust species with a pronounced clove-like aroma.
Choose a sunny, warm spot with fertile, well-draining soil. Water consistently without waterlogging the roots and pinch out the growing tips regularly to produce a fuller plant. Lemon basil grows best during the warmer months and does not tolerate frost. You can also plant Lemon Basil seed if you enjoy raising herbs from seed.
