Vaccinium 'Sunshine Blue' (syn: Vaccinium corymbosum ‘Sunshine Blue’)

Price range: $12.10 through $22

The Sunshine Blue Blueberry Plant combines excellent fruit, compact growth and low-chill performance in one remarkably adaptable shrub.

Why Choose a Sunshine Blue Blueberry Plant?

Officially named Vaccinium ‘Sunshine Blue’, this cultivar is commonly known as Sunshine Blue blueberry, Sunshine Blue highbush blueberry, Sunshine Blue southern highbush blueberry and dwarf blueberry. It belongs to the Southern Highbush group, developed to produce blueberries reliably in regions where traditional high-chill varieties may struggle.

Its very low chill requirement makes it suitable for a wide range of Australian climates, including many warmer areas. The plant is also self-pollinating, so a single bush can produce fruit without another blueberry nearby. However, growing a second compatible blueberry may improve pollination and overall harvests.

Pink, bell-shaped flowers fade towards white before developing into generous crops of excellent-quality blue fruit. The berries are delicious picked fresh and can also be added to baking, preserves, breakfast bowls, smoothies or frozen for later use.

Growing the Sunshine Blue Blueberry Plant

Tough, vigorous and particularly easy to grow, this compact cultivar has performed well in both sandy soils and heavier loams. It prefers moist, well-drained, acidic soil in an open position with full sun. Unlike many blueberries, it can tolerate soil closer to a neutral pH, although mildly acidic conditions will still support the healthiest growth and fruit production.

This frost-resistant perennial woody shrub is drought-tender, so regular watering is important during dry weather, flowering and fruit development. Mulching around the root zone helps retain moisture and keeps the shallow roots cool. Its semi-deciduous habit can vary with climate, with plants retaining more foliage through mild winters.

Reaching approximately 1 metre high and 1 metre wide, the Sunshine Blue Blueberry Plant suits productive garden beds, edible hedges and large containers. Its manageable size, attractive flowers, blue-green foliage and colourful seasonal changes also give it genuine ornamental value.

For a varied berry garden, grow it near our Bilberry Plant or Cranberry Plant. Sunshine Blue offers an especially practical choice for smaller gardens and warmer districts, bringing together compact form, adaptability and prolific fruiting.
