Black Elderberry Plant

Botanists officially call this remarkable species Sambucus nigra. It grows naturally in Britain, Europe, and western Asia. People know it by many names. Some examples are Elder, Common Elder, Black Elder, European Elder, Elderberry, Black Elderberry, European Elderberry, European Black Elderberry, Elder Bush, Bore Tree, Bourtree, and Pipe Tree.

In medieval England, people planted elder trees near their homes. They believed these trees could ward off witches and malicious spirits. However, folklore also warned that the tree’s resident “Elder Mother” needed respectful treatment. The name Bore Tree refers to the plant’s hollow stems. People once used these stems to make pipes, whistles, and fire-blowing tubes.

Creamy white flower clusters bloom before small, deep purple-black berries develop. These flowers create both ornamental interest and a valuable food source for wildlife. People have traditionally steeped elderflowers to make tea, cordials, and sparkling drinks. Meanwhile, cooks across Europe have long transformed ripe berries into jams, jellies, syrups, and richly coloured wines.

Beyond the kitchen, the plant also holds a fascinating place in European herbal traditions. Its berries can yield violet and black dyes. Crafters use other parts to create green tones. Traditionally, people add the strongly scented leaves to compost. They also use them to make garden sprays that discourage aphids and caterpillars.

This frost-resistant, deciduous perennial can grow into a spreading shrub or small tree. If gardeners leave it unpruned, it may reach about 10 metres high and 3 metres wide. On the other hand, regular pruning helps maintain a smaller, bushier shape. This is ideal for productive gardens and informal screens.

Plant it in moist, fertile, well-drained soil. Choose a protected spot with full sun or partial shade. The Black Elderberry tolerates cold conditions well, but it still needs reliable moisture and protection from prolonged drought. This is especially important in warmer Australian climates.
