Candelabra Aloe is a striking evergreen succulent known for its bold architectural shape and outstanding resilience. In fact, its official name is Aloe arborescens (syns. Aloe candelabrum, Aloe natalensis, Aloe mucronata var. arborescens). Additionally, this plant is also called Tree Aloe, Krantz Aloe, Torch Aloe, Candelabra Plant, Candelabra Lily, and Octopus Plant. Because it is native to South Africa, this elegant species develops multiple upright stems that branch into a distinctive candelabra-like form. Consequently, it stands out in gardens and large landscape plantings.
This evergreen succulent grows to around 2 meters tall. Moreover, it thrives in well-drained soil and does best in partly shaded to sunny spots. Once established, it resists drought and withstands light to moderate frosts. Therefore, many gardeners in Australia consider it a dependable choice. Furthermore, dense rosettes of fleshy grey-green leaves provide year-round interest. Finally, mature plants send up spectacular spikes of vibrant red-to-orange flowers during the cooler months, attracting birds and beneficial pollinators.

Like Aloe Vera, this species has a long history in traditional gardening and herbal practices. For instance, some references suggest people use it medicinally once the plant reaches a certain age. This may apply to seed-grown plants. However, cuttings retain the parent plant’s physiological maturity. As a result, a cutting from a mature 12-year-old plant retains that maturity, even if it has only grown for several months.
