Kaempferia galanga, commonly known as sand ginger, aromatic ginger, or Kencur, is a compact tropical herb in the ginger family (Zingiberaceae). Native to Southeast Asia, it thrives in warm, humid climates. People across Indonesia, Malaysia, and parts of India especially value it for culinary and medicinal uses.

Kaempferia galanga stands out immediately because of its growth. Unlike many gingers that grow tall with upright stems, this plant stays low and almost stemless. Its broad, smooth leaves spread flat against the ground, often forming a symmetrical pair or small rosette. Kaempferia galanga prefers shaded to partially shaded environments with well-drained, rich soil. The plant grows seasonally, often going dormant in cooler or drier periods before re-emerging with warmth and moisture.
