The Lime Balm Plant brings a bright twist to a much-loved cottage herb, with green foliage carrying a distinctly zesty lime fragrance.

What Makes the Lime Balm Plant Different

Botanically named Melissa officinalis ‘Lime Balm’, this aromatic perennial belongs to the mint family. It resembles traditional lemon balm, yet its crushed leaves release a sharper scent reminiscent of freshly cut lime. The scalloped foliage forms a leafy clump approximately 60 cm high and 50 cm wide, suiting herb beds, sensory gardens and containers.

Its common names are Lime Balm, Lime Balm Plant, Lime-Scented Lemon Balm, Lemon Balm ‘Lime Balm’ and Lemon Balm ‘Lime’.

The Lime Balm Plant in Garden History

Lemon balm has grown in European herb gardens for centuries, where its fragrant leaves became associated with hospitality, beekeeping and household herbal traditions. This lime-scented selection carries that story in an unusual direction. Small, pale flowers emerge during the warmer months, inviting bees and other beneficial pollinators.

Grow it alongside our Lemon Balm Plant to compare their fragrances leaf by leaf. Gardeners seeking a ready-harvested herb may also enjoy our Lemon Balm Dried Leaf.

Harvesting Lime-Scented Leaves

Fresh leaves bring an unexpected citrus note to fruit salads, salad dressings, herb vinegars, chilled water and homemade cordials. They can also be steeped as a fragrant herbal tea. Historical traditions associated lemon balm tea with calm, low spirits and memory, although traditional use should not replace professional medical advice.

Harvest young leaves before flowering for the freshest flavour. Snip as needed and bruise them gently to release their aroma. The lively fragrance also suits potpourri, scented posies and botanical gifts.

Plant in a sunny to partly shaded position with fertile, freely draining soil. In hot Australian districts, protection from harsh afternoon sun helps keep the foliage lush. Water regularly while establishing, then trim after flowering to encourage compact regrowth. As a perennial, it can return year after year, providing a dependable supply of lime-scented leaves.
