Holy Basil Tulsi Plant

Ocimum tenuiflorum

Price range: $11.66 through $15.75

The Holy Basil Tulsi Plant brings the fragrance, history and living tradition of India’s revered Ayurvedic herb into the home garden.

Holy Basil Tulsi Plant with Distinctive Character

Ocimum tenuiflorum, the botanical name for Holy Basil, grows as a lighter, more delicate annual than many culinary basils. Slender stems carry small, dark green leaves, and purple colouring often appears along the stems and leaf veins. Upright flower spikes produce small purple blooms at maturity, adding gentle colour to the herb garden.

Eugenol, the compound responsible for its unmistakable clove-like fragrance, fills the air whenever you brush or harvest the foliage. The plant grows to about 60 cm tall and fits well in productive garden beds, herb gardens, and generous containers.

The Story of the Holy Basil Tulsi Plant

Indian gardeners have cultivated Tulsi for centuries, giving it an exceptional place in Ayurveda and household tradition. However, the names Tulsi, Holy Basil, and Sacred Basil refer to several related plants, which can make identification confusing.

This listing is specifically for Ocimum tenuiflorum, commonly called Krishna Tulsi, and is distinct from our African Basil Plant, Ocimum gratissimum. Separating the two helps gardeners select the species they intend to grow.

This form is especially valued for its richly aromatic foliage and long association with traditional herbal preparations. People commonly gather the leaves for fragrant infusions and may enjoy them alone or blended with other herbs. They can also bring warm, spicy character to culinary experiments, aromatic plantings and seasonal herbal harvests.

Growing and Using Your Tulsi

Choose a sunny, warm, sheltered spot with freely draining soil. This tropical annual is drought- and frost-tender, so water consistently during active growth and protect it from cold conditions. Regular light harvesting encourages fresh shoots, while allowing several stems to flower provides ornamental interest and an opportunity to collect seed.

For gardeners who prefer to start from seed, Tulsi Krishna Seed is also available. Temperate Tulsi is another worthwhile companion, particularly for creating a varied and appealing herbal tea garden.
