Citronella Grass

Citronella Grass adds height, movement, and a fresh citrus fragrance to warm-climate gardens. Moreover, its accepted botanical name is Cymbopogon nardus.

This aromatic member of the grass family became an important, cultivated source of citronella oil. For example, distilled from the foliage, the oil has long been valued in perfumery, soaps, candles and outdoor insect-repellent products. Long, arching green leaves form a vigorous clump reaching approximately two metres high in suitable conditions. Allow room for its tall, spreading habit, and cut back older foliage as needed to keep the clump tidy and encourage fresh growth.

Although the foliage has some traditional flavouring uses in parts of Asia, it is more pungent and less commonly used in cooking than culinary lemongrass.
