Citronella Grass adds height, movement, and a fresh citrus fragrance to warm-climate gardens. Moreover, its accepted botanical name is Cymbopogon nardus.

A fragrant history

This aromatic member of the grass family became an important, cultivated source of citronella oil. For example, distilled from the foliage, the oil has long been valued in perfumery, soaps, candles and outdoor insect-repellent products. Consequently, this heritage sets the plant apart from purely ornamental grasses: it is attractive in the landscape and connected to a familiar natural fragrance used worldwide.

Long, arching green leaves form a vigorous clump reaching approximately two metres high in suitable conditions. Additionally, evergreen in warm climates, it creates a lush screen, adds texture to productive gardens, and moves beautifully in the breeze. When crushed, a leaf releases its unmistakable sharp, lemony aroma.

Growing Citronella Grass

Plant in a sunny, warm position with fertile, well-drained soil. Furthermore, regular moisture supports strong growth, but the ground should not remain waterlogged. This tropical grass also appreciates humidity and protection from frost and cold winds. Allow room for its tall, spreading habit, and cut back older foliage as needed to keep the clump tidy and encourage fresh growth.

Its abundant leaves make useful mulch once cut and allowed to wilt or dry. Similarly, when positioned near outdoor living areas or along garden boundaries, it also works as an aromatic companion plant. Although the foliage has some traditional flavouring uses in parts of Asia, it is more pungent and less commonly used in cooking than culinary lemongrass.

Citronella Grass or lemongrass?

These close relatives are not interchangeable. Therefore, choose Citronella Grass for its bold fragrance, oil-producing tradition, screening value, and generous mulch material. For a softer citrus flavour in teas and Asian dishes, consider our Lemongrass (Green Plant) instead.

Practical and impressive, this is a hardworking choice for tropical and subtropical gardens. You can harvest the leaves for aromatic garden use, enjoy the dense foliage as a living backdrop, or grow it simply for the fragrance released whenever the leaves are brushed or cut. Ultimately, Citronella Grass brings both utility and beauty to your garden.
