Lungwort plant, Pulmonaria officinalis, is sometimes known as Jerusalem Cowslip, The young leaves used in salads and soups. Named because the rough speckled leaves resemble lung tissue. The Doctrine of Signatures suggested is use as a remedy fro lung and bronchial ailments. Flowering tops are astringent and use to reduce excessive mucus, haemorrhoids and diarrhoea. Lungwort plant is native to Europe and prefers moist, well-drained soils in a protected, part-shaded position. Frost resistant but drought tender. A perennial plant, growing to 0.3m x 0.3m. Pink to blue flowers in late winter or early spring.
