The American Persimmon Plant brings autumn colour, distinctive bark, and richly sweet fruit to an edible garden. Its accepted botanical name is Diospyros virginiana. As a deciduous member of the ebony family, it is native to central and eastern North America.
Common names include American Persimmon, Common Persimmon, Eastern Persimmon, Persimmon, Simmon, Possumwood, Possum Apples, Florida Persimmon, Date Plum, Winter Plum, and Jove’s Fruit. Additionally, other recorded names include American Ebony, White Ebony, Bara-bara, Boa-wood, and Butterwood. However, since some names also describe other species, the botanical name offers clarity.
Small, bell-shaped flowers appear among the spring foliage. Later, autumn brings orange fruit and leaves that can turn yellow, orange, or red. Meanwhile, mature trunks develop deeply patterned, blocky bark, adding interest through winter.
The fruit measures around 2–5 cm across and becomes wonderfully sweet at full ripeness. Therefore, wait until it feels very soft before eating; otherwise, firm, unripe fruit contains strongly astringent tannins. Ultimately, its transformation rewards patient gardeners with a seasonal treat rarely encountered in everyday shops.
Scoop ripe flesh straight from the skin, removing any seeds. Alternatively, you can strain the pulp for puddings, cakes, cookies, custards, or frozen desserts. Furthermore, freeze portions to enjoy your harvest beyond autumn.
This tree also has an unusual timber story. For example, craftspeople historically valued its hard, shock-resistant wood for textile shuttles and wooden golf-club heads.
Start by choosing a sunny spot with deep, well-drained soil and room for a substantial tree. Typical mature heights range from approximately 5–12 metres; however, favourable conditions can produce taller specimens.
Water regularly during establishment and mulch around the root zone, keeping the trunk clear. Once established, trees tolerate some dry conditions. Additionally, remove unwanted root suckers and choose the planting position carefully, since its deep taproot makes later relocation difficult.
Trees usually carry male or female flowers separately. Consequently, for dependable fruiting, plan for a compatible male and female unless you have a confirmed self-fruitful selection.
