Red Crystallinum Anthurium

The Red Crystallinum Anthurium adds copper-red colour to a velvet-leaf collection. Over time, as it matures, the leaves turn deep, luminous green.

Known botanically as Anthurium crystallinum ‘Red Crystallinum’, this collector’s aroid is prized for its leaf transformation. For instance, new foliage appears in red, bronze, or coppery tones. As the leaves harden, they darken and reveal a velvety surface with silver-white veins. Furthermore, the heart-shaped leaves look sculptural, and their contrasting veins catch the light like crystals.

Unlike Anthuriums grown for colourful spathes, this plant is collected for its foliage. Consequently, each new leaf creates a living display on a shelf, plant stand, or in an indoor collection.

Anthurium crystallinum is native to Panama and Colombia, where it grows as an epiphytic subshrub in wet tropical environments. Interestingly, Jean Jules Linden and Édouard André formally published it in 1873. At that time, velvet-leaf Anthuriums were becoming popular in European glasshouses.

Its name refers to the crystalline effect of pale veins on dark foliage. Additionally, ‘Red Crystallinum’ adds a dramatic juvenile colour phase. Collectors can, therefore, watch each leaf change before it reaches its mature shade.

Place it in bright, indirect light for rich colour and healthy growth. Moreover, use an airy, free-draining aroid mix that holds some moisture but does not stay wet. Water when the upper layer is dry. In addition, warm conditions, steady humidity, and gentle airflow help new leaves open cleanly.

The plant makes a striking foliage focal point, especially in a humid cabinet or with other velvet-leaf species. Alternatively, pair it with Anthurium crystallinum ‘Dorayaki Silver’ to contrast red-emerging growth with round, silvered foliage. You can also add Variegated Frydek Alocasia for bold veining and extra texture.

Leave space around the leaves, avoid harsh direct sun, and keep it away from cold drafts. With patience, each new leaf marks a new stage in an evolving indoor display.
