Meet the Clove Tree (Syzygium aromaticum), the tropical evergreen that produces one of the world’s most recognisable spices. Those fragrant cloves in your pantry begin as its unopened flower buds. Once harvested and dried, they bring their distinctive warmth to baking, curries and drinks.
Native to Indonesia’s Maluku Islands, the Clove Tree carries a story in its name. “Clove” comes from the French word clou, meaning nail, a nod to the dried bud’s shape. In Chinese, the flower bud is known as Ding Xiang.
Also known as clove, cengkeh, cengkih, chengkeh, and chingkeh, this slow-growing evergreen adds a fascinating touch to a tropical garden. Its glossy green leaves create an attractive canopy, and its foliage releases a spicy fragrance when crushed.
Clusters of flower buds develop on mature trees. If left to open, they reveal small flowers, followed by dark purple fruit. In suitable conditions, the tree can reach around 15 metres or more, so allow plenty of room.
The Clove Tree loves warmth and humidity, so it suits frost-free tropical and warm subtropical gardens. Choose a sheltered spot protected from strong winds, especially when the plant is young.
Give it a sunny position and moist, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. In hotter locations, young plants can benefit from some protection from harsh afternoon sun. Water regularly as it establishes and avoid letting the soil dry out completely. Good drainage matters too, as the roots should not sit in waterlogged soil.
This tree is frost- and drought-tender. Gardeners in cooler regions will need a protected, warm growing environment and should consider whether they can provide suitable conditions year-round.
Clove trees take patience to mature and flower, but their fragrant foliage offers something to enjoy along the way. Pair yours with a Ceylon Cinnamon Plant or Green Cardamom Plant to explore more of the remarkable plants behind familiar kitchen spices.
