Wampi is a rare and highly prized fruit tree native to southern China and Southeast Asia. Not only does it have an attractive appearance, but its fragrant flowers and delicious, sweet-tart fruit also make it stand out. As a member of the citrus family (Rutaceae), Wampi combines notes of grape, kumquat, citrus, and lychee in its unique flavour. Therefore, collectors of unusual fruit trees and home orchard enthusiasts particularly enjoy cultivating Wampi.
This evergreen tree produces clusters of small, oval fruits that ripen from yellow to golden-brown. In addition, the juicy flesh ranges from sweet to pleasantly tangy, depending on the variety and growing conditions. Many people eat the fruit fresh; however, others use it in juices, jams, desserts, and preserves. Furthermore, growers in parts of Asia have cultivated Wampi for centuries, valuing it for both its fruit and ornamental appeal.
Wampi produces large clusters of fruit that hang elegantly from its branches, thus creating a spectacular seasonal display. When the tree flowers, small, fragrant white blossoms cover the branches, attracting bees and other pollinators to the garden.
Wampi thrives in warm temperate, subtropical, and tropical climates. Once established, the tree grows vigorously in the ground or in large containers. As a result, its dense, attractive canopy with glossy green foliage makes it an excellent edible landscape specimen.
