The Soursop Tree brings a taste of the tropics home, producing remarkable green fruit filled with fragrant, creamy white pulp. As a result, it stands out among tropical fruit trees.
Botanists call this evergreen fruit tree Annona muricata L., and it belongs to the custard apple family. People around the world know it as Soursop, Soursop Tree, Graviola, Guanabana, Guanábana, Guanabano, Guyabano, Brazilian Pawpaw, Prickly Custard Apple, Sour Custard Apple, Corossol, and Sirsak.
Its glossy, deep-green leaves form an attractive canopy, while unusual yellow-green flowers emerge from the branches and older wood. Over time, these flowers develop into large, heart-shaped fruits with flexible, curved spines- an unmistakable feature that gives the tree an exotic presence.
The ripe flesh is soft, juicy, and aromatic, balancing sweetness with a refreshing acidic edge. In fact, its flavour is often compared to a tropical blend of pineapple, strawberry, citrus, and banana. You can enjoy the pulp fresh or transform it into juice, smoothies, sorbet, ice cream, desserts, and preserves. However, always remove the skin and black seeds before eating, as the seeds are not edible.
This fruit has travelled far from its native range, spreading from southern Mexico through tropical South America. Furthermore, its many regional names reflect its longstanding place in Caribbean, Latin American, African, and Southeast Asian food traditions. Today, gardeners especially value it as a backyard fruit tree because freshly harvested soursop is delicate and rarely travels as well as it tastes.
Choose a warm, frost-free position with full sun, shelter from strong winds, and fertile, free-draining soil. Additionally, regular moisture supports healthy growth, but avoid waterlogging. Be sure to mulch over the shallow root zone and keep mulch clear of the trunk. In cooler districts, grow it in a large container so you can move it into reliable warmth and bright light during winter.
