French Purslane, Portulaca oleracea sativa, is a much-improved selection of the wild species. Purslane is an excellent salad and pot herb. A rich terrestrial source of vitamins, minerals and Omega -3 fatty acids, considered important for strengthening the immune system and preventing heart attack. Used medicinally to clear toxins, lower cholesterol, reduce fevers, and heal rashes. Mashing the whole plant makes a soothing poultice for sore eyes or sore nipples. Purslane is a native of inland Australia and adaptable to most soils but prefers an open, sunny position. Drought and frost resistant. A perennial ground cover, growing to 0.25m x 0.5m.
