Midyim Berry Plant: A Sweet Native Discovery

Midyim Berry Plant brings pretty white flowers, delicate fruit and a taste of Australia’s coastal bushfoods into your garden. Its soft berries offer a sweet, mildly aromatic flavour, tender skin, and small edible seeds. In fact, many bushfood enthusiasts consider them among Australia’s most delicious native fruits.

The accepted botanical name is Austromyrtus dulcis (C.T.White) L.S.Sm. Common names include Midyim Berry, Midyim, Midgen Berry, Midjem Berry, Midjin Berry, Sand Berry and Silky Myrtle.

A Coastal Story in Every Berry

Native to coastal northern New South Wales and southern Queensland, this perennial grows naturally among sandy heath, scrub and open forest. As a result, its coastal origins explain its preference for free-draining soil and reliable moisture.

Small white flowers appear in the leaf axils, followed by round berries about 1 cm across. Additionally, their pale skin carries tiny purple-blue speckles, giving each fruit a distinctive, almost painted appearance. Birds also enjoy the berries, bringing extra life to your garden.

Enjoy Your Midyim Berry Plant Harvest

Pick ripe berries for a gentle, aromatic snack straight from the garden. Alternatively, scatter them over yoghurt, breakfast bowls or fruit salads, where their speckled appearance adds interest. You can also try small harvests in desserts or homemade preserves.

Their delicate texture makes them especially rewarding to grow at home, where you can enjoy them fresh. However, handle fruit gently and freeze surplus berries promptly to keep them for later use.

Growing for Flowers, Fruit and Garden Interest

This low, spreading plant grows to about 90 cm, with size varying with conditions. As a result, you can use it along garden edges, in a low informal hedge or as an edible feature in a container.

Choose sun or partial shade and soil that drains freely. Also, water regularly during establishment and in dry weather, as Midyim dislikes drought. Mulch helps retain moisture around its shallow growing area.

Established plants can tolerate light frost. Nevertheless, provide shelter from severe frosts. Prune lightly when needed to maintain your preferred shape.
