Grumichama (Eugenia brasiliensis) stands out as a rare and highly ornamental tropical fruit tree. Gardeners and collectors prize it for its glossy foliage, attractive growth habit, and delicious cherry-like fruit. Native to the Atlantic forests of Brazil, this species belongs to the Myrtaceae family. Notably, the family includes other well-known fruiting species such as Jaboticaba (Plinia cauliflora), Pitanga (Eugenia uniflora), and Strawberry Guava (Psidium cattleianum).
Also known as Brazil Cherry, Brazilian Cherry, Brazilian Plum, Spanish Cherry, Grumixama, and Grumichama, this species produces round, juicy fruits. The fruit colour ranges from deep purple-black to bright yellow, depending on the variety. Most growers cultivate Eugenia brasiliensis var. erythrocarpa. In contrast, Eugenia brasiliensis var. leucocarpa produces the rare, yellow fruit. The fruits taste sweet and aromatic, and many describe the flavour as a blend of cherry, apricot, and plum. Consequently, you can enjoy the fruit fresh or use it in jams, juices, desserts, and preserves.
You can easily grow this species in subtropical and tropical climates. It adapts well to a range of soil types, as long as drainage is adequate. Once established, the tree tolerates moderate drought and light frosts. Moreover, its compact growth habit makes it suitable for smaller gardens and large containers.
