Dragon Scale Mint Alocasia brings the look of weathered silver and hand-beaten metal to a living leaf. Its thick, sculpted foliage features dark, recessed veins beneath shifting shades of mint, green and silvery cream. Because the colouring varies between leaves, every plant develops its own pattern and character.
The plant’s defining feature is its remarkable texture. Deep venation divides each leaf into raised sections resembling overlapping dragon scales, while mint variegation softens the darker green colouring. New leaves bring an element of anticipation, as their markings gradually become clearer while they unfurl and harden.
At the heart of this cultivated form is Alocasia baginda, a jewel Alocasia species originating in Kalimantan on the island of Borneo. Its naturally compact growth and unusually substantial leaves helped make Dragon Scale forms favourites among foliage collectors. Mint colouring takes that familiar structure in a rarer direction, transforming its prehistoric appearance with smoky, marbled tones.
Unlike large elephant-ear varieties, this plant delivers dramatic foliage without demanding an expansive space. It can become a living focal point on a plant shelf, enclosed cabinet, shaded patio or bright indoor table. Display it beside a Variegated Frydek Alocasia to contrast metallic, heavily textured leaves with softer, velvety foliage.
Provide bright, indirect light to support strong growth and preserve its distinctive colouring. Use an airy, free-draining aroid mix and water when the upper layer begins to dry. The roots appreciate consistent moisture but should never remain waterlogged. Warm temperatures, protection from cold draughts and elevated humidity will help prevent damaged edges and encourage healthy new leaves.
Its compact form also makes it suited to curated indoor collections, terrarium-style cabinets and botanical photography. Rotate the pot periodically so its leaves receive balanced light, and the plant maintains an even shape.
Like other Alocasias, it contains calcium oxalate crystals and is not edible. Keep it away from children and pets, and wear gloves if you have sensitive skin when handling or repotting it.
