Dense-flowered Mullein: A Commanding European Herb
Known botanically as Verbascum densiflorum Bertol., this biennial comes from Europe and western Asia. Consequently, it is recognised by several common names, including Dense-flowered Mullein, Denseflower Mullein, Dense-flower Mullein, Large-flowered Mullein, and simply Mullein.
For centuries, European herbalists valued mulleins for their soft leaves and bright flowers. Furthermore, folklore credited the plant with driving away evil spirits. Its tall, torch-like flower spike may explain its old associations with protection and light.
Growing Dense-flowered Mullein
During its first year, the plant forms a broad rosette of softly felted leaves. Then, in its second year, it produces an impressive flower stalk covered with densely arranged yellow blooms. As a result, mature plants can reach about 2 metres high and spread up to 1.5 metres.
Choose a sunny, well-drained position with chalky, gravelly, or otherwise lean soil. Once established, the plant handles dry conditions well and needs little fuss. Its architectural form also suits cottage gardens, medicinal herb plots, pollinator plantings, and naturalistic borders.

The bright yellow flowers are edible and can add small flashes of colour to salads or garnishes. However, harvest only correctly identified, chemical-free flowers and use them sparingly.

Historical sources also describe mullein flower oil for external ear care. Nevertheless, never put oil into an ear without professional guidance, particularly when pain, discharge, or eardrum damage may be present.
