Angelica keiskei (Ashitaba / “Tomorrow Leaf”)

Angelica keiskei Koidzumi, more widely known as Ashitaba or “Tomorrow Leaf,” is a remarkable perennial herb native to the coastal regions of Japan, particularly the volcanic island of Hachijō-jima (historically known as Hachijo-son). It belongs to the same broader botanical family as other medicinal Angelicas, yet stands distinctly apart in both its growth habit and cultural significance.

What makes Ashitaba truly unique is captured in its nickname: “Tomorrow Leaf.” When a leaf or stem is cut, the plant exudes a bright yellow sap and, astonishingly, begins regenerating new growth within a day. This regenerative quality has made it a symbol of longevity and vitality in Japanese tradition. Unlike many herbs that require careful harvesting cycles, Ashitaba offers continuous yield, making it both practical and deeply symbolic for home growers.

Visually, Ashitaba presents as a lush, upright plant with thick, glossy green leaves and hollow stems. It thrives in mild, coastal climates but adapts well to subtropical regions, such as parts of Australia. The plant produces umbels of small white flowers typical of the Apiaceae family, followed by seeds that can be collected for propagation.

In terms of use, Ashitaba is highly versatile. The young leaves and stems are edible and commonly used in teas, powders, tempura, and traditional dishes. Its slightly bitter, earthy flavour reflects its dense nutritional profile. The plant has long been valued in Japanese folk practices, particularly for its association with wellness and daily vitality.

When compared to other Angelicas, such as Angelica (European Angelica), Bai Zhi, Du Huo, and Dong Quai, Ashitaba stands out for its fresh-leaf consumption and regenerative growth, rather than for its primary root-based use. While many Angelica species are harvested for their roots in traditional systems, Ashitaba invites a more immediate, ongoing relationship: picking, using, and watching it regrow.

Key features:

  • Rapid regrowth after harvesting (“cut today, grown tomorrow”)
  • Bright yellow sap rich in distinctive plant compounds
  • Edible leaves, stems, and shoots with culinary and wellness uses
  • Strong cultural roots in Japanese island traditions
  • High-yield, low-maintenance perennial suitable for home gardens

Ashitaba is more than just a plant; it represents a rhythm of use and renewal. For those drawn to meaningful, productive gardening, it offers both substance and story in equal measure.
