Bare-rooted plants

The White Mulberry, or Morus alba, is a fast-growing deciduous tree with sweet fruit, graceful form, and a long history in traditional food and silk production. Nurseries supply it bare-rooted during dormancy so gardeners can plant it in cooler months. It quickly establishes, grows into a productive shade tree, and offers broad seasonal appeal.

Native to China, White Mulberry now grows worldwide as a silkworm feed, but gardeners also prize it for its abundant berries and adaptability. Mature trees produce many elongated fruits, ranging from white and pinkish to deep purple-black, depending on variety and ripeness. The sweet, mild, honey-like flavour makes these berries ideal for eating fresh, drying, preserving, baking, or attracting wildlife.

White Mulberry stands out for its vigorous, resilient nature. Once established, it tolerates a wide range of climates and soil types. It also grows rapidly, develops a generous canopy, and provides cooling summer shade. These features make it both ornamental and functional in home orchards and edible landscapes.

Growers lift bare-rooted White Mulberries during winter dormancy for transplanting with minimal stress and strong root-to-soil contact. Planting in the dormant season encourages healthy root growth before spring begins.

Key features of White Mulberry include:

Sweet edible berries are produced in abundance.
Fast-growing deciduous shade tree
Adaptable to varied climates and soil conditions
Attractive branching structure and lush summer foliage
Excellent for edible gardens, orchards, and homestead planting
Available bare-rooted for winter planting and strong establishment

A classic tree with both beauty and purpose, White Mulberry offers seasonal fruit, generous shade, and a connection to one of the world’s oldest cultivated garden species.
