Salvia miltiorrhiza, known as Dan Shen or Red Sage, is a perennial herb with both ornamental and cultural value. Native to China, it has been cultivated for centuries as an important plant in traditional Chinese herbal practice, valued for its distinct deep red roots.

This plant stands out for its contrast: above ground, it is a soft, attractive garden herb with tall stems and elegant sky-blue to violet-purple flowers. Below ground, it develops rich, crimson roots, its main feature. This decorative yet functional duality enhances its appeal in both gardens and medicinal cultivation.

Botanically, Salvia miltiorrhiza grows to about 60 cm tall and 40 cm wide, forming a neat, upright clump. Its green, lightly textured foliage allows the flowers to stand out during bloom. Its showy flowers make it suitable for both utility gardens and aesthetic borders.
