Codonopsis, Codonopsis pilosula, is also known as Dang-shen and is sometimes known as “Poor Man’s Ginseng”. Occassionally substituted for Ginseng (Panax ginseng) in Chinese medicinal formulae. Codonopsis builds chi and tones the blood. It is regarded as nutritious, sweet and warming. A gentle tonic for a variety of ills. Codonopsis is native to China and is suitable for any well drained soil, in a protected partially shaded position. Drought and frost resistant. A climbing perennial, growing to almost 2m in length.
